Perché il nocino si fa il 24 Giugno?

Why is nocino made on June 24th?

Jun 24, 2024

Nocino, our traditional liqueur with an intense and unmistakable flavour, is closely linked to a specific date: June 24, the day of St. John the Baptist.

But why is nocino made on June 24th ? Let's discover together the reasons for this ancient tradition.

The Magical Night of San Giovanni

The night between June 23rd and 24th has always been considered magical and full of symbolic meanings. It is the shortest night of the year, the summer solstice, a moment of transition between spring and summer, between light and darkness.

In many cultures, this particular date is associated with propitiatory rites, the fertility of the earth and the collection of medicinal herbs.

Nocino and the famous dew of San Giovanni

Popular tradition says that walnuts collected on the night of San Giovanni, still unripe and immersed in dew, possess magical and healing properties.

It is said that the dew of San Giovanni gives the nocino intense properties, making it an elixir of long life and a powerful aphrodisiac.

But why is nocino made on June 24th?

  • Level of ripeness of walnuts: on the night of San Giovanni, walnuts reach the ideal level of ripeness for the preparation of nocino.

At this time the peel is still tender and the stone is rich in juice, this level of ripeness guarantees a greater intensity of aromas.

  • Magical properties of dew: according to tradition, the dew of St. John has purifying and healing powers; it is said that by absorbing the dew, the nuts acquire magical properties, which are consequently transmitted to the liqueur.

  • The power of the stars: during the period of June 24th the Sun is at its highest point in the Northern Hemisphere, legend has it that the collected nuts are full of a particular energy, linked to the vitality and strength of nature.

Nocino Petrone: a tribute to tradition

For us too, the preparation of nocino is an ancient ritual that has been passed down from generation to generation. And as per tradition, the walnuts collected on the night of San Giovanni are left to macerate in alcohol, together with spices.

The mixture is then left to rest for at least 40 days in a cool, dark place, so that the aromas blend perfectly.

Our Nocino is obtained from the maceration of fresh walnuts, collected on the night of San Giovanni, in pure alcohol and selected spices.
